For my acting class, we have to write and preform a monologue. Well I'm a 3rd. year, and I'm one of the three assistants that help show the first years what to do.......so I want this to be REALLY good to prove that I can do it. I'm so tired of always doing something funny.....I want to do something serious now. Maybe something that I'll have to cry in (you know, to PROVE that I can).....but I don't what it should be about......That's where y'all come in.....I'm not asking you to do my homework for me or anything like that.....I just need a subject. A sad, serious subject. So could you please help me out? But If you would like to give me some pointers....they will be more thatn welcome, but I DO want to writh it myself. Thank you.

Here are some pretty serious topics that should yield interesting monologues. You want to cry? Any one of these should do just fine.

1. An unmarried young lady facing an unplanned pregnancy. What choices do you face?

2. Age 19, finding out you're adopted...and the parents you thought gave birth to you, didn't. Perhaps you found out by stumbling across your birth certificate. Perhaps you found out after your parents die suddenly. Or maybe your birth mother/ father seeks you out.

3. Coming to grips with a dirty little secret you and your uncle have kept since you were 9 years old.

4. Confronting addiction for the first time. Could be your own or that of a family member. A friend? A spouse?

5. A battered wife with two kids, at a crossroads in your life. You have no education, no job, no prospects. You've been controlled and abused for the entirety of your relationship with the father of your children. Do you leave because you're scared for yourself and your kids? or do you stay because you're scared of the unknown?

Hope these help spark some inspiration! By the way, you should never force or manufacture tears or any kind of emotion when you're onstage "just to prove you can." The most compelling performances come when the actor forgets she's acting and allows the truth of the character to come through.

For instance, a battered wife would be numb. She's seen it all and been through the ravages of hell. She may not cry at all. She's learned all too well to hide her feelings because emotion has always gotten her into trouble and ended up with a beating. I think you get the idea. Good luck to you!! Break a leg! ; )
