Hi,
I know where you are coming from! I have the same problem with mine, from sport injuries when I was young, and a broken one now (3 weeks ago sliped on some ice) grrrr....
Anyway, I know of a couple of things that really help. One of them I am even using on my current broken ankle to heal it faster. The first is what is called a TENs stimulator. It stimulates the mucles around the joint and both relives pain and strengthens the mucles to stablize the joint.
In the case of my break they say it will speed the healing process by about 30% They come in lots of diffent sizes. and types, mine has 4 leads and 8 pads that can be used to stim several different areas at once. I orriginally got it to help with some back problems at the suggestion of my chiropractor but it has come in real handy for other joint issues. The goal is to give the muscles a work out with out stressing the joint. No better way to do it.
The other thing I discovered is Hyaluronic Acid, your body produces it naturally, sports medicine doctors have been injecting it into atheletes agrevated joints for years because until recently there was not a bioavalible form availible. But about three years ago they figured out a process to make the product to be taken by mouth. I'll tell you it is almost a miracle if you ask me. I can sure tell the difference when I go off it for a while cause the aches in the joints do come back. I have arthitis on several of my joints so I really notice. Anyway, there are several makers of it out there but the best is in a liquid form put in capsules. Start off with about 200 mgs twice a day for 2 weeks then you can back off to about 100 mgs a day. It will make you feel like your ankle is new again.
Good luck and hope this helps.

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.
So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.
Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.
A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.
Heal your ankle fully & fast?

I have a similar problem. I broke my ankle when I was a kid (5 years old, I think) and it has been problematic ever since. Have you tried ace wrapping it for support? How about ankle braces? Have you been to physical therapy? Depending on what state you live in, you might be able to walk into a phsyical therapy clinic and be able to be treated without a reffural. Or you can ask your doctor about sending you to physical therapy.
