I haven't seen the second movie, but yes, it would have been nice if he made a cameo. Your question made me curious as to why he didn't make a cameo. Wikipedia actually addresses why he didn't, it's under the critism section.

Yes, he should have played Charlies Uncle. The second movie was based more on the book but, I think the first movie was the best! Johnny Depp should just stick to Adult movies!

I think remakes, even by Tim Burton, are a waste of time and money when the original is already a masterpiece.

I think that is a good idea. It would be the only reason I would rent it. I wouldn't pay to see it. Haven't seen it & I probably never will.
