Okay I have been with a company for 3 years and it's getting to the point I can't take things anymore. I'm basically a database administrator, secretary, filing clerk, systems analyst, purchasing agent, and bookkeeper for AR and AP. I asked for a raise and actually got told I couldn't get one then the people whose job I was doing extra work for got raises and bonuses. Christmas recently came and went with nothing, no bonus, no congrats and I haven't had a raise now in over a year.

So I was curious if other people were in similar situations and how they got a better job and left their current one easily. I'm going back to school to get certs for computers in addition to my working knowledge (A+, MCSA, MCSE) but I'm near my breaking point. Any ideas on how to keep my cool or a way to find another job quicker? I'm 29, so being young and doing real office work sucks in my area I get judged on my age more than my ability a lot.

I saw that someone mentioned making a list. Unfortunately I have done that already and my boss just seems to believe what she wants to believe not what is actually going on. There is a lot of politics since I work for a smaller company as well.

Maybe to help with the raise you could make a list of the original duties you were hired to do and another list of the duties you currently doing. Your boss may need to see it in writing of how much extra work you are doing. Also, let them know you are not happy. Telling him that with the list, they might see that if you quit, they would have to hire 3 or more people to take over the same amount of work and therefore cost alot more in salary for the company. I am in the same situation but fortuate enough to also be the Controller so I know how much money is there and what it is being spent on. But I do plan on having this list for my review in a couple of months.

Is there anything you like about this job and if things were to change would it entice you to continue with this company?
I f your answer is YES, then I would immediately approach your direct supervisor and inquire what you need to accomplish to move to the next level. You may also wish to request a re-affirmation(in writing if possible) of your job description. This may bring attention to the extra work you are doing for "others".You might also ask if the company offers bonuses and what you need to accomplish to achieve it.
These steps may not result in the changes you wish, but they will promote you to communicate better and possibly might alert employers to the need to define parameters better. Beware that this may also result in them acknowledging that you are unhappy and they may begin looking for someone to replace you with, feeling that you are ready to move on.
If the best scenario occurs and you get a positive response to your inquiries, great. If not, continue completing your job responsibly but don't overextend yourself to be accomodating. Keep looking elsewhere, try a temp agency and see what possibilities they might have for you. It can't hurt and many times these positions end up to be permanent.
If your answer is NO, then just mainatin your professionalism again, without overextending yourself, and continue looking. It is always better to go from a current job into a new job than being unemployed!!!! So don't let office politics etc get you into a snit when you know you are ready to move onto something better. You never know when you will need those connections again!!!
Good Luck!

In this century and this techno economy most serious people are job shopping starting at about 2 yrs on job , and switching in the 3 to 4 yr range , esp. in their 20s.
It often takes about a decade to find a company worth hanging with for a longer period .
Fear not change . . . 4 out of 5 times , life is way better.
