Every Mormon kid at my school is planning on going there. They never explain why-they say "well, it's owned by my church" or something to that extent

I'm a "Mormon" who did NOT attend BYU. University of Wyoming and Duke University for me! Still, I understand why many LDS people want to attend.

First, BYU has developed into a pretty good school, and some of the colleges there are first-rate. My brother got an accounting degree there, and it opened to door to a top accounting firm and a great career.

Second, it's very inexpensive for a private school. If you're a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the tuition is even lower. Tithing contributions paid to the church are used to pay some of the costs, so members get a break on tuition.

Third, the school has and enforces a pretty strict honor code. If you want to go to college with people who live high standards, BYU is a good choice. You don't have to be a mormon to attend, but if you're not willing to live a moral life, you'd be happier somewhere else.

Well, why do Catholics go to Notre Dame?
Part of the reason I would think is because it is a private religious school and therefore the people going there are expected to live by certain standards...it's a lot easier being around people who share your same views on life. Plus, it is a very good college...
And, it is hard to get into, they don't just accept someone because they are Mormon....You have to have certain GPA, test scores and other extra-currecular activity leadership...my younger sister tried to get accepted there but the lowest score on the ACT test they will accept (to be considered for a scholarship) is 29 and she got a 28 both times she took it...so she didn't even apply.

well I just moved from UT and BYU is really popular obviously because it is mostly Mormon populated. There is this idea that girls go there to find husbands and I had a roomate who did just that! BYU is a really good school though. You can almost always find it listed in top colleges. Plus they have a lot of sports and excel in those areas. The college is very strict and a lot of Mormon raised kids strive to go there.

Every answer you got is good. But, in contrast, I'm Mormon and you wouldn't catch me dead at BYU. I went to U of Utah (the one true "U"), there is about a 50% ratio or less. I wanted to experience more of what it's like in a more "real" area then sheltered; but, still close to home. Plus, BYU gives me the creeps a little. BYU is a good school, it just wasn't for me. and I found my wife without having to go there. No, I didn't meet her at the U.

Pretty much for the same reason that most of the people going to Notre Dame, Georgetown, Boston College, Villanova and Holy Cross are Catholic.

I am and I never wanted to go to BYU. I don't know, I guess there is something to be said to want to go to a school where you'll have something in common. Especially something so important.

They probably feel very accepted there, and they can practice their religion without having to explain to other prejudiced people what it is about and why they practice it. I don't blame them.
