Whatever you like most! Both careers are very competitive. If you don't have a natural talent for these career choices, then it probably won't work out. To start a career in fashion design, you should first make a portfolio (like most artists). Since you are probably in middle school or high school, you should try out for a school that is specifically for the visual arts. The program should help you from there to move on to bigger and better things and possibly start your own line. :) To become a writer, obviously you should take some classes in college specifically for writing! :) If you want to start publishing books at a younger age, you should send your writing in to a publishing company that has to do with the genre of your writing. Like poppy books for teen fiction or yearling for more realistic fiction. Good luck with your future!! :)

Hey,

The best thing to do is to purchase an art book, with blank white pages, and start drawing all kinds of different designs.

Why not make your own dress with fabric or something like that?

If you have work experience, do it at a fashion designing place so you can gain lots of experience.

Then when you study your course you can show them your book which you have been drawing in and some examples of your designs, and this will make you look as if you are really keen on fashion designing.

You can even do an apprenticeship in VCE (Year 11 & 12) which will be really good on your resume!

Best of Luck,

Bianca! ^_^

Definitely:
1) Keep up-to-date on all the biggest fashion mags. If you're really passionate about fashion design, subscribe to Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Elle, and ElleGirl, at least. Buy both teen mags and magazines aimed at older women (such as HB), to get more than one perspective.
It seems expensive, so I'll let you in on a secret: you can get subscriptions to these for like, $5 each or less - and that's for an entire year - on eBay. I've bought subscriptions to 4 magazines on eBay, and have gotten each magazine on time each month.

Learn to sew if you haven't already - many established fashion designers hire people to sew for them, but up-and-coming designers and art college students always have to sew their own garments. And unless you're aiming to have your designs sold at KMart, you'll need to be skilled at several different sewing techniques.

Enter fashion design contests once you're able to sew well enough, if you can find them. Do what you can to get exposure - it's a necessity! Why do you think all of the expensive brands were popularized by first being seen on a celebrity?

It's not a necessity, but it'd be great if you could visit one of the fashion capitals of the world: New York, Tokyo, Paris, Milan. These places can be very inspiring to designers.

Don't feel as if you need to copy whatever trends are popular at the time - all the best fashion designers are able to identify what the public will love, create something unique, and *start* trends. If there's a design you love, tweak it to fit your personal style.

Good luck. :)

Only create what you would wear, everyday, in public, with confidence.

I laugh at so many "Designer" fashions it is almost a comic relief. When I see people actually wearing the silly, fluffy, multi-colored, mixed print (by the way, do you see anybody on the street wearing this stuff or just the stars on TV?) I crack up!

Remember that stupid swan dress somebody wore to some event a few years ago? See, I don't even remember who it was but it stood out in my mind because it was so stupid!

How about those long pointed toed shoes (that is the best! the STUPID women's shoes with those ugly, long toe things sticking out!!! What a HOOT! "I wear a size six but my shoe is 12 inches long")!!

I may buy off the rack and make my own clothes but I look good in every situation. I am very confident that I don't look stupid and people can afford to buy my clothes for everyday use, widely acceptable.

Be true to yourself!!!

My friend feels the same way. (no, im not an adult. so my friend is not a freak) she's in modeling. thats what got her thinking. get an early start. we (unfortunaly) have a school uniform. and in 7th grade, (my grade) the teachers cut a little slack on us with the uniforms. she took her shirts and covered our ugly pathetic school logo with rhinestones. it was pretty hott. GET TO IT! they have things where you can draw or design a shirt. do it!
