Actually there is a big difference in guitars. A lot depends on the size of your hands. (Long fingers, short fingers, etc.). Go to a local music store in your town. They will help you. By the way, I have been playing for over 40 years. Good luck.

The squire affinity telecaster pack it fits all sizes feels nice and comes with a good size amp. I have one and I must say the tone is WAY WAY WAY better than a strats tone. It is actually so good I got rid of my other two electrics because I only needed this one try it out I bet you'll like it

I think that you can start off with a used one and/or cheap. When you do your practice and begin to know better your guitar and want to continue to do so, then is the time to buy a new and expensive guitar.
Also, if your hands are not so big to use an adult's size guitar, there are also junior guitars. They are not so big, but not so little either and can fit in your hand.
My experience is that I bought a guitar 12 years ago, and I didn't finished my guitar classes, and I don't play guitar at all. I have it for my older son.
So, to begin your lessons, you don't have to buy an expensive guitar. A used guitar that's in good conditions can be enough. You can look in ebay and, if you want a good new one, in musiciansfriend.com there are a lot of good guitars for a fair price. And you can ask them too if in doubt.
Good luck and good guitar hunting!!!

Since you are just starting out I reccommend the Squire Strat Pak. The entire package comes with a guitar, gig bag, strap, video, and a little amplifier. The entire package runs about $250 bux. Perfect for starting out.
