Well... They rebuilt the city better than it was before and they adopted a cool Phoenix as part of the official city seal. But mostly it was a pretty bad scene with a lot of human suffering. I guess you could call it instant urban renewal. They did learn a lot from previous mistakes in city planning that led to much of the disaster. There was more destruction from the fires than there was from the quake

People learned to unite and work together to help rebuild San Fransisco.

Yes better building standards. Better fire fighting capabilities.
