The library has 216 biographies. There are 5 biographies of men for every 4 biographies of women. How many biographies of women are there.

5/9 x 216 are for men, 4/9 x 216 are for women.
Usually people learn fractions in middle school so this would be a reasonable fifth grade question. And it's good to see that they are actually learning to do this. I know college people who don't understand fractions.
Should I spoil it for you by telling you the answer?

There are 5 for the men and 4 for women so..
5+4=9
There are 216 biographies
9 for men and women soooo..
216/9= 24
For each set there are 24 book and 4 biographies of women
24*4= 96
There are 96 biograhies of women.

w=number of biographies of women.
m/w=5/4
m/(m+w)=5/9
w/(m+w)=4/9
m+w=216
m/216=5/9 multiply both sides by 9
m/24=5 multiply both sides by 24
m=120 biographies of men
w/216=4/9
w/24=4
w=96 biographies of women.
m=w=120+96=216 biographies total.
I can't believe that anyone expects a 5th grader to do this.
