Do you mean traditions? Like eating black eyed peas? Many people feel like if they eat certain foods on New Years Day that they will have a prosperous or lucky new year. I wouldn't call it 'weird' it's just part of a long standing tradition.

A lot of people eat black eyed peas. Some think this sets them up for prosperity during the new year, because black eyed peas is a meal normally eaten by middle class & below.
Others eat flan ... mostly Hispanic (I like it too)

I am from the south and grew up being told that you eat black-eyed peas for health, cabbage for wealth, and ham for prosperity. Friends from the north have not heard of this so I wonder if it is a southern thing?

In my family (and lots of others from the Appalachian Mountains), we won't wash clothes on New Years Day.

It's said that if you wash clothes on New Years Day, you'll "wash" a member of your family away and they'll die that year.

I wouldn't believe it, but my grandmother forgot and washed clothes on January 1, 1961 and her husband died that year.
