My aunt used a print-on-demand site at www.lulu.com. You don't pay anything up front. When you order individual copies of the book, then you pay for it. They have a wide choice of bindings and formats.

Yes....an agent can make a great deal for you and you will get paid. Without representation you will be hard pressed to get published without a fee. You may be able to win an award for your masterpiece in a competition, which then they will decide to represent you in getting it published or they will help you make a deal. Do not use that print on demand service unless you want to fork over a lot of money.

I would say let people read what you have and if they like it, ask them to donate to publishing it. look for donors, and maybe you can put their names in the book as a thank you.
