He is roughly 4 feet long and about two years old. I only got him about a month ago and this is the first time ive seen him shed. How long, days, hours, does it usually take?

The shed process is a bit more complex then most people realize. If you handle your snake often, as I do, first you will notice the scales on the belly turn a pinkish color. A few days later, the skin will begin to dull. Then, depending on the size of the snake, within a week to two weeks the eyes will 'grey' or 'blue'. Usually withing a few days they will clear. And finally anywhere from 24hours to 5 days later they will shed the old skin.

Our Colombian boa is 64" long and from pink belly to shed skin it takes her about 2-3weeks. Our Ball python is 31" long and she takes about 2weeks from pink belly to shed skin. Older snakes will shed less often then younger snakes and larger snakes tend to take longer(from start to finish) than smaller snakes.

I noticed that my boa started to soak itself (9 months old, about 3 feet long) alot (like 25 hours straight). I got a little worried and kept an eye on it and finally I took it out of the bowl because I was afraid something was wrong. It was a little cool, but probably okay, it slithered off of the log I laid it on and went into it's hide. There was a small piece of shed on the log. (about the size of a thumbtack) Then it was nothing for days, I couldn't even tell where that piece came off. about a week later I saw the eyes had turned blue, the next day they were back to normal. I couldn't figure out what was going on for sure until I noticed he stopped going into his hide for a couple of days. I piced it up and sure enough there was the skin. So once the eyes went blue, I think it happened that night.

once they actually start to slid out of the skin it turns inside out as the snake sheds iit of it doesnt take that long some an hour some longer not days they just rub against something rough in the tank to start the shed comming off so make sure you have something in there like bark or tree branches rocks etc also mist with water to keep hydrated before and after shedding

hi there
OK the shedding period is between 6-8 weeks... usually once the eye change back to normal it will take up to a week before the shed is complete ...... to aid in the shed place a bowl of water in the enclosure big enough for it to soak ....and a log or rock some kind of rough surface for it to get the skin off...

I have a ball python and she can take up to two days shedding. The biggest thing is humidity. To "help" your snake put it in some Luke warm water for five min to loosen the skin.
