I need to know what sec 8 pays for. I heard of getting a utility check if you aren't working, and the gas and electric are paid.

Tbird you may be right, but you can't automatically assume that this person has a computer...because public libraries have computers with free public access!!!

I can only speak for project-based Section 8.

Here is how it works...

The Section 8 program requires you to pay up to 30% of your income toward rent. A monthly amount is then calculated. This is called the Total Tenant Payment (TTP). A utility allowance is then subtracted from the TTP. The net result is the Tenant Rent. If the utility allowance is greater than TTP, then Tenant Rent is a negative number. In that case, the tenant receives what's called a "utility reimbursement."

Here are two contrasting examples of a positive and negative ("utility reimbursement") Tenant Rent:
Example 1
Income: $2,000/year
Utility Allowance: $30

TTP: $2,000 * 0.3 / 12= $50

Tenant Rent: $50 - $30 = $20


Example 2
Income: $2,000/year
Utility Allowance: $75

TTP: $2,000 * 0.3 / 12= $50

Tenant Rent: $50 - $75 = ($25)

Utility Reimbursement: $25

Now that you understand the calculations, let's discuss some terms.

A utility allowance is a monthly amount that is subtracted from the TTP to determine the Tenant Rent. If the Tenant Rent is a positive number, the tenant pays the Landlord that amount. If the Tenant Rent is a negative number, HUD forwards that amount in trust to the Landlord and the Landlord sends that amount to the resident. The utility reimbursement is intended to assist residents with utility bills that are paid for out-of-pocket, such as an electric bill. The Landlord is required to forward the funds to the tenant within 5 business days of receipt from HUD. The owner can send a check to the tenant or forward the funds directly to the utility company.

Note that utility allowances are determined by the Landlord (and approved by HUD) once per year. For each unit type, the Landlord is to obtain utility bills for the past twelve months from a certain number of tenants. The owner calculated the average expense incurred for each unit type, then submits to HUD a proposal to change the utility allowance.

For example, let's say there are 100 one-bedroom apartments in a project-based Sec 8 property where tenants pay for electricity only. The Landlord obtains twelve months of electric bills for 12 households and determines the average cost at $35. This amount will be proposed by the Landlord as the utility allowance for the one-bedroom units.

u do get a SMALL utility check but ONLY if you are paying utilities.. The only way electric and gas are paid is if ur landlord says so.. I have been on sec. 8 for 12 years and I have ALWAYS had to pay utilities.. the check u get won't even come close to covering the costs of it all.. (i got like $20).. and then u have to explain to them how u can live without any income..

Yes you get a utility allowance which comes on a debit card, you can pay your electric and gas with it. They dont pay elec and gas

It don't work that way. You don't get actual cash, you get a voucher that says the govt. will pay part (in some cases all) of the bills with you paying what the govt. don't. Same with rent. Food 'stamps' are usually allotted. Go to the HUD site. They can inform you of what is and isn't.

What are your problems, for 1 you are on a computer, right there is your utility bill, but Oh yes I probably paid for that computer some how in the long run.

You have to go to your neighbors and ask them to give you money to pay your electric bill its the same as getting a check from our government.

Are you being government funded?If so your income would determine if your elligleible for cost of living benifits.Check into SMUD. If you live in CALIFORNIA.
