Ok First and Formost. If you are going to answer the question with "YOU NEED TO GO TO THE ER RIGHT NOW" then please don't bother answering the question because that doesn't help me one bit.
I had an exam today to see how soft my cervex was and if I were effaced. After the exam I was bleeding which my midwife said was normal after a cervex exam. What I want to know is should I still be bleeding almost 11 hours later?! It's not a heavy bleeding and it's more like when I wipe there is blood. So Is this normal?!
Also would an exam cause back pains and stomach cramping?! I'm not dilated but my cervex is soft and I am effaced a little so I know I'm not in labor, any ideas!?
Again please don't answer my question by telling me to go to the ER because I am sure if the bleeding I had earlier wasn't normal my midwife would have taken care of it and my child is still a little ball of energy.
Thank you.

1. thanks for the downgrade whoever that was.
Anyway I called my midwife and she told me to wait a few hours to see if the pain get's worse and then to call her back and to put a pad on and if it gets damp to call her back.
Thank you all for your advice. I didn't want to sound rude for saying "don't tell me to go to the er" just 95% of the time people have given me that answer on questions and it made me freak out and cry when everything turned out to be fine.
Anyway thank you all for your answers

Most of us just don't use midwives dear, but if you do and you trust her, I can only say the bleeding is minimal and it sounds like you will be in labor pretty soon. God
Bless...

You may be in labor! I understand that you aren't dilated yet, but often times and exam will trigger labor, and dilation can happen over a few weeks or a few hours. Everyone is different. The back pains and cramping make me think labor and bleeding is also a sign. Start timing your contractions and see if they are regular. If they are, call you midwife. She will inform you about what to do. Even if you don't think that it's labor, if you have ANY questions you should call your midwife. She can give you a much more informed answer than anyone here can. Good luck! And congrats!

OK, first of all just because you were not in labor 11 hours ago does not me en you are not in labor now! Back pain and cramping both are signs of early labor or "back labor". Some women don't even realize they are in labor because they say it feels like a back ache instead of normal contractions. I have three and I had strong enough contractions with all three to know. About the bleeding, its because your cervix is softening up and there for is more sensitive, so as long as you are not soaking a pad you should be fine. But keep an eye out on your pain level, if its gets any more intense then you might want to call your midwife.

Okay, a little blood can be normal or not, but since you are 38 weeks, and because you hare experiencing back pain and stomache pain, you need to call your Midwife, you sound like you are in the early stages of labor. If you water hasn't broken, it most likely will very soon. Some women have had their water break while urinating and not realized it.
CALL YOUR MIDWIFE
Good luck, hope you have a healthy baby.

Sounds like normal to me, you need to walk walk walk and in a few hours you'll be off to have a blessing of a life time. The cramping and back ache are early signs of labor. If thing get worse or the bleeding gets heavier then go to ER. If you are worried call the midwife, that's her job to answer your questions and keep you as calm as possible.Good Luck and Congrats you are about to be a Mommy!

Actually, even if you weren't in labor during the exam, it doesn't mean you aren't now. Sounds like all of the classic signs of labor...bloody show, back pain, cervix showing changes. I think a little blood like you describe is okay, just if it gets heavy it could be a placental abruption or other medical emergency. If that occurs, call 911, don't wait to drive to the er.

Well lets see I am 38 weeks pregnant also. I was in the ER last night with bad stomach pains and my back hurting really bad like somebody beat me up. I am not even a finger tip yet and they said I am in early labor. You might be just as well. You could call your doctors office and they will page the on-call doctor for the hospital and they will talk to you. but they will most likely tell you to come in and get checked out. Cause I told the Doctor and she said for me to come in so she can check me and the baby out. Good luck to you.

I am pregnant with my third child. I bled after exams not that heavy though. I did cramp simply because thats what happens. If your gushing blood like a period strength I would no not normal. I have always been recommend by my nurse to be seen. It is really up to you on how comfortable you feel.

The symptoms you're describing are NOT normal after an exam unless the doctor was excessively rough during the exam
