it is confirming that you want to continue in the catholic church. all of the other sacraments have been arranged by the parents. confirmation is a time when you speak for your self and confirm that you do want to continue on as a christian. you make this decision for your self.

What Confirmation means in the Catholic church is that you are becoming an "adult" member of the church, and declaring that this is the religion you are chosing to accept at this point in your life. It is not to say, that if later in your life, you may not choose a different path of religion or spirituality, but it is saying that you are accepting "adult" membership in the Catholic religion and faith. I believe that the Catholic religion would want a person who was getting confirmed (although the age of 13 or 14, the usual age of Confirmation), is a very young age to be an adult member of anything, to consider themselves a Catholic for life, but I know that many people, myself included, have later in their lives, chosen a different path of spirituality as the one chosen upon my Confirmation simply does not resonate with me anymore. I hope this is helpful.
