For pre-1995 the scanner we at the dealerships used what was known as a Tech1 which is the user interface to on-board diagnostics. For 1995 and later models, there were some 1994 that used this as well, we use the Tech2 for the interface. The Tech2 is a far more powerful tool and can be used as the interface to the earlier years with some add-on hardware. Remember, these scanners only spit out info. on codes. They do not say for sure which part of the circuit they are monitoring has gone bad.

It depends what year the car is, but if it is 96-current, it is OBD II (on board diagnostics) If it is older than 96 it is called an OBD I scanner. Since they are expensive, if your check engine light is on take it over to auto zone and have them hook theirs up. They will do it for free and only takes about five minutes. HOPE THIS HELPS!!

IT REALLY DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO DO...IF YOU JUST WANT TO PULL THE TROUBLE CODES OR SEE WHY YOUR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON, THEN YOU'RE LOOKING FOR WHAT'S CALLED A CODE READER...THESE CAN BE VERY USEFUL BUT WILL NOT GIVE YOU SPECIFIC ANSWERS...IF YOU WANT MORE PRECISE ANSWERS, THEN YOU ARE LOOKING FOR WHAT'S CALLED A LAB SCOPE...THESE DIAGNOSTIC SCANNERS CAN BE USED WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING AS WELL AS WHILE DRIVING TO HELP PIN POINT EXACT PROBLEMS...

OBD-I, OBD-II and soon OBD-III. OBD= On Board Diagnostics. If you read the owners manual of your vehicle it may have a way of accessing the info directly from the driver's seat.

a cheap version will be called a code reader, all it will do is read the code. no data can be read from this. the actual unit that can read data and actually be useful in diagnostics is called a scanner.
