Bears do not go into a true state of hibernation. Instead they go into what is called "torpor". A state of reduced activity accompanied by lowered metabolism, heart rate and respiration. They typically do this as a result of lower food availability. in locations where food availability remains high they may be active for much of the winter. The lake Tahoe region is a prime example. Bears have become dependent on garbage in this population and many of the bears remain active all winter. When in torpor bears may be in deep sleep in their den and might not wake at all even when entered by people etc. but they may also stir, go out, feed, walk about etc.

A bear is easily roused from his winter map. He may even wake up of his own accord and come out of his chosen haven to prowl around for a few hours, days, or even longer. Bears that do this winter-walking are often ones on the slim side. It’s the bruins bulging with fat who den up early and sleep the winter through. Hunters have learned through dressing fat bears killed at the beginning of winter that the stomach is empty and shrunken into a tight, hard knot, which prevents eating anything more. Apparently when a bear reaches a certain state of fatness, this contraction of the stomach acts as an automatic food shutoff, and he is ready for sleep.

A bear does not hibernate. Hibernate means that they drop their body temp down to just above freezing and don't wake up until it is warm again. A bear can not do that- they don't have the antifreeze properties in their blood- if their body temp was close to freezing, they would literally be a dead ice cube.
Bears do wake up and eat occasionally. They can go to the bathroom as well. While they are sleeping, there is a mucous plug so they don't poop or urinate on themselves.
They are not hibernating- basically are going to go for a long nap. If you go to warmer climates, the bears have food year round and do not have any period of inactivity at all.

They do move aroung and might even peer out of their den and walk a short distance from it on warm days, but most of the time is spent sleeping.
