It's a scanner. It won't tell you exactly what's wrong though. When something is wrong, the computer in the car stores a code. The code may be something like "P1415 Secondary Air Injection (AIR) System". This example could be a sensor gone bad, or a leak somewhere, or something like that. So now that you know the code, you know where to go looking. You can buy a basic scanner at most auto parts stores, Walmarts, etc. Good luck!

Tech1 scanner for pre-1995 and a Tech2 scanner for later model years. These scanners are the ones that GM dealers have. There are aftermarket versions that you can use as well, but they are all called scanners.

Its called an On Board Diagnostic System (OBD). Check under your hood to see a note that says "OBDII Compliant"
