Ah, so you are reading John Wyndham's The Kraken Wakes!
The best pronunciation I can find is `crocken'

If the word is pertaining to an ancient mythological creature, or anything of that sort, then it is pronounced as "cracken" just like "crack" and "en". If it is another form I may also be able to help, but this is the only way I have ever heard it pronounced.

I once heard it rhymed with awaken, but that might have been poetic license.
