It's a code that gets sent to you in an email message to verify the email address you gave them is correct. It's usually a long string of letters and numbers. Often there is a link inside the email you can click to verify rather than having to manually cut and paste the code.

You buy software online and the company emails you a code that shows they have your email correct and that you're the purchaser of the product. You then enter the verification code when you download the product.
