I am wondering if you actually need a t-mobile pre-paid phone to get the t-mobile prepaid service? Or can you use a normal t-mobile phone from a non prepaid service ( monthly service)

If you do need a pre-paid phone why they are the same phone models

The phones are the same. It is the sim card that determains the type of service you can have. All you need to do is go to a T-mobile store and ask for just a pre paid sim card. they were about $20 a few years ago.
So go ahead and use your normal T-mobile phone.

Mmm almost correct. The phones are exactly the same, yes, but the SIMs are also exactly the same too!

What decides if a phone is pre-paid or post-paid is the fashion in which the SIM is activated. At the point of purchase, the employee will either activate the SIM card as a post-paid account or a pre-paid account. Once this is done that SIM card can never be changed any other way... however the phone is still able to do either or.

A replacement SIM is $20 however if you have a former post-paid cell phone and would like to convert it to a pre-paid phone, you will actually need to pay $50. $30 for the activation kit and $20 for the SIM card, but they are bundled together.
