include "buy it now" as an option - that way people don't have to wait for auctions to end. sometimes they end at times that are inconvenient for your best potential buyer, and you lose that customer without ever knowing about them

a good time to end an auction is sometime after 5pm PST (in the USA) - that way the entire continental US is more likely to be able to bid (off work, off school, etc..)

other than that, a good day of the week, for my own experience, is to end on a tuesday or a wednesday - friday and saturday, your potential bidder might be out

however, if more people understood how ebay's bidding works, there'd be less snipers. someone that waits til the last minute to start bidding will generally offer more than they originally wanted to - sometimes resulting in people that suddenly can't pay, and that would like a two payment offer. obviously, this shouldn't take place

also, if an auction has been up for a week, anyone who's going to look for it, probably has seen your ad, or another one they like more. myself, i go for the three day auctions, and they end just as well. almost every single one of my sales ended with buy-it-now though, which is nice, because then the price what i was willing to sell it for

I have found that having a 5 day auction, ending on a Sunday evening works best

I would say 4-5 days, that way people who are impatient and really want the item won't buy it from someone else. When I see that I have to wait 7 days for the auction to end, I end up buying from someone else.
