I live in Hawaii and unfortunately, you can't get much for under $175,000 unless you live in the boonies with a catch-water system. Houses in Hawaii averages around $625,000. If you are interested in Hawaii with a tropical and nature filled setting, I would recommend that you check out Big Island (Hilo, Mountain View, Ka'u, Hawaii Paradise Park, etc.). Most of that side of the island is still new, less developed and cheaper. Hilo is the biggest town on that side.
