I just installed a new SONY 16x+18X DVD±RW DUAL DOUBLE LAYER BURNER AWQ170A in my Dell Dimension 3000. It will recognize DVDs, but it won't recognize CDs of any type. I have tried changing the cable setup and jumper settings to no avail. I even removed the other CD-ROM that was installed on the same cable and the problems remains. Any suggestions for futher diagnose or remedy would be greatly appreciated.

It is probably defective. They use a different laser for CD vs DVD. The Cd one is probably defective. Try another one. It should work, out of the box, with no firmware upgrade.

Try install the latest firmware for your drive. I believe you can download the firmware on Sony website. If that doesn't work consider return it and get a different dvd drive or different brand.

Make sure you haven't current drivers for your product, not the ones that came with burner. If you can't get to work would take it back and exchange it for another model.
