Is there an insect about the size of a dime, looks like a piece of bark and also smells like bark if crushed? It has a harder outside and a little buzz sound to it.

Your question is too vague for a definitive answer. There are nearly one million species of insects (about 75,000 kinds of ants) and dime size suggests being rounded...body length is most specific. You also neglect to mention the area you live in...obviously an insect of Malaysia would fit the description but if you are in Italy, the identification would be wrong. There are many such insects world wide...and even butterflies that mimic bark or dead leaves. The smell is irrelevant again as many insects release potent deterrents (some are toxic). You need to be precise.

Yes. I believe it is some sort of beetle. The bark smell is a defense that it uses to discourage any predators such as birds from eating them. I don't remember the exact name, but I heard about an insect like that on a nature show.
