What if all the ambulance drivers and firemen or doctors did that? Imagine a surgeon stubs his toe on a bed in the ER - all the other doctors dropped their respective scalples flinging their masks off and went dashing to their aid. Or say an ambulance hit a curb on the way to a call and all the other ambulances madly floored it to the scene leaving bleeding masses huddled all over the rest of the city vainly, patiently waiting....

No, seriously. Really, what if ambulances did that? They don't serve and protect anymore. They are turining into government sanctioned gangs - and I am a Republican adult!

With out getting into the opinions of police officers let me say that there is a reason that one officer has to respond to investigate another officer's accident. Oh, and an officer is going to be called in just as quickly for a fender bender with an ambulance, a city worker's government vehicle and a fire engine.

The first is liability. Basically, anytime a public agency is involved in an accident of any sort there is a good chance that the other party is going to want to sue. I'm not saying everyone, but there are enough that it is a serious situation. Government agencies are viewed as deep pockets. You can thank unscrupulous attorneys for this problem.

Second, there is often the claim of cover-up. If the officer involved merely left some information and split then when the all too often lawsuit is filed the other party's attorney is going to cry foul because nobody bothered to document the accident and ensure nobody was injured.

Finally, patrol cars, fire trucks, ambulances, ect. are inspected everyday. Damage is noted and must be reported or someone is going to be given days off. Therefore a supervisor or accident investigator is called.

Usually the officer that responds is a traffic officer whose duty is enforcement of traffic laws and accident investigation. More serious offenses and calls are not going to be put on the back burner just to investigate a fender bender. Only an available officer responds.

I hope this helps.

A friend of mine once told me that you can take a nice guy, give him a badge and a uniform and a gun, and in two weeks you'll have an @**hole. That about sums it up.
