... a dude walking on the line or curve, left to right.
Positive slope = climbing
Zero slope = level
Negative slope = descending
The bigger the slope (in absolute value), the steeper the climb or descent.

The simplest way is to think about a triangle, add legs to your line, it doesn't matter how long, just so they are connected. Then think of the coordinates if it was on a coordinate plan- a plane w/ x and y axis. Think about what are the two endpoints of the hypotenuse (the original line). Then use the slope equation. Subtract the y of 1 from the other and do the same thing for the x. Put the answer of the y on the numerator of a fraction and the x on the denominator. This is your slope- hope you understand.

Samantha,
You are going to thank me for this information.
I found a site that easily explains the SLOPE IDEA.
Before I give you the site, think of slope as a STEEP HILL.
A good slope sample is a rollercoaster fall.
The steeper the tracks become, the faster it runs down the track.

Like he said, rise over run
How much up for every one over.
If you go up 2 for every one you go over, the slope is 2.
If you go down 3 for every one you go over, the slope is -3.
If you go up 1/2 for every one you go ove, the slope is 1/2.

rise over run
think....
How far is it above the x axis and how far it is away from the y axis
Thats means rise over run
All you have to do is pick a point on line, any one, it doesn't matter. See how far away it is from the x and y and divide the x from y axis | you will always be right no matter what.

Rise divided by run.
(How far up or down over some distance forward or backward.)
