It could be 28 minutes from now or 280 years from now. It takes 28 minutes for a Russian ICBM to reach continental US targets.
1. The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics states that the quality of all energy in the Universe is degraded irreversibly....the inexorable death of the universe is not only predicted, its mandated by entropy.
2. It's an astonomical surety that our Sun will supernova in a billion years, leaving the earth a burned crisp...
The thought that by the very nature of entropy the ultimate and only possible future for man is annihilation has infiltrated our culture like a paralysis. "How is it possible to understand life when the entire world is ordered by a law such as the second principle of thermodynamics, which points to death and annihilation?"
There are many forms of extinction you may not have heard of. For example super-volcanoes, the most destructive force on this planet. An eruption would destroy a vast area of land and trigger a nuclear winter. The whole of Yellowstone is a massive super volcano - and it is 40,000 years late in its cycle of eruptions. Scientists have been noticing some strange tectonic activity in the park…
The combined nuclear capacity of the US and Russia is more than enough to kill every human on this planet. Nuclear Holocaust is the stuff of nightmares but the Cuban Missile Crisis showed us how close we can come so easily. But there are little known incidents in which nuclear submarines have been shockingly close to launching, with no crisis elsewhere.
There is also the threat from bacteria and viruses. Bacteria are becoming immune to our antibiotics at a much faster rate than we are discovering new ones. Eventually we will have nothing left to fight them with. Terrorists and leaders of rogue states have long been trying to produce large quantities of tropical viruses, such as Ebola and Lassa Fever. New technology allows these viruses to be engineered to be more contagious, stronger and harder to kill. Their effect on the human body is already terrifying.
The Bible prophesises the end of the world in the Battle of Armageddon. Many scriptures in the Bible describe this event, and give clues to how and when it may happen. Several of them seem to point to a date of 2007 for the return of the Antichrist and the beginning of the Battle. They depict in detail how the Battle will be fought - it starts with an alliance of Arab nations invading Israel.
Millions could also die with rising sea levels. If the Antarctic ice sheet were to melt then sea levels around the world would rise by 55 meters, completely flooding hundreds of large cities such as Los Angeles, New York and Tokyo. Now there is a large amount of evidence that the ice sheet is thinning and global sea levels are starting to rise. With the predicted rise in global temperatures over the next century the rate of melting can only increase.
New experiments being carried out at a particle accelerator called the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) could have unthinkable consequences. There, and at other such places, scientists are attempting to recreate the big bang - the event that formed the universe. Some predict that they could cause a black hole which would consume the Earth, others that it could turn Earth into a planet of 'strange' matter, leaving it with no substance, and another possibility is that an explosion would be released from the lab with infinite energy.
The most famous example of an event that could cause Armageddon is a Near Earth Object (NEO). This term describes asteroids and comets passing close to Earth. There are millions of these capable of hitting the Earth with apocalyptic force. Impact would cause vast fireballs, huge earthquakes to ripple round the globe and towering dust clouds that would cause a nuclear winter. Apophis will have a near miss in 2029 with a very slight probability of impact in 2036.

This is a very good question. And there is some interesting history with this question, that can lead to the answer, I believe......
SInce the dawn of man, there have been doomsayers who predict the demise of man, animal, and earth.
Did you know before Christ that many thought the world was ending when there was an eclipse, meteor shower, or another cosmic event? Records show that suicides increased dramtically as the unworldly slothens would kill themselves rather than face the "end".
After Christ came and educated the dumb masses on things like the heavens, earth, hell, God, etc., people began to look at the calendar as a means for predicting the end. Thousands perished in December of 999 because nobody could fathom the Earth reaching 1000 years of age (which was funny because we now know it is millions of years old, billions rather) and countless more thousands perished because they chose suicide over the 2nd coming of Christ who would surely not take them for the "ride".
In modern times, most doomsday experts predicted civilization would end in 1984, 1988, 1989, 1992, and 1999. Yawn, we are still here. Most people are smart these days, and few tossed themselves off the top of buildings.
Experts now agree the likely demise of the planet earth will occur when the Sun fizzles out..........well, actually it will sort of 'pop' first, and then explode.
This little popping thing it will do, will fry the eyeballs of all inhabitants of earth, about a split second before destroying the earth and all other planets in our solar system.
The only argument they have is "when" the sun will die, bringing about our death. It ranges from 700 million years from now to 5 billion years.
I like to agree with both sides, and split the difference, so I predict it will end 2.1250 billion years from now.
I will be old.........very old.

Probably a long time from now since we (human beings) inherently seek to live rather than die as a whole. Barring some cataclysmic astrological event, we should have centuries and hopefully a few more millenniums. We might die tomorrow though too, no one knows the future and nothing is certain. An old professor of mine once said that the only thing that's certain in life is uncertainty.

the question is relative...if you think that the world is going to end in an everybody gone to heaven or hell theory then you may be misguided by the theologians of the day. but if you study history many worlds have ended...the dynasties of China, Egypt and Rome to give you an example. Yes... the world is coming to an end much like those empires ended...corruption, debauchery and greed is tearing the world apart in front of your eyes...so the answer is NOW...for the past 100 years this world has been ending...and 100 years relative to the time that the earth and man has been in existence is nothing more than a blink....~~~~W

Well we know for sure that the world will die in about 5 million years. If we don't find a way to stop it though the elements are going to take out alot of us. War will take some of us. I believe we will evolve. Technology will send us to inhabit other places in the universe. That's a bit profound really isn't it?

Define the world. My world? Your world? Humanity? The Earth? The universe?
My world will end when I die, much like when your world will end. I can't say when the end of humanity is... I can tell you that the Earth will end in 4.53 billion years (the sun is half way through it's life cycle, and it is 4.57 billion years old)... And the universe will end long after that.

Technically, it wont end but it will mess up and be really hot because of global warming. To answer your question if you continue down the path we are taking probably 100 years, if we change before we go to far into global warming it could last for billions of years. We probably will move to another planet.

I think the world will end when humanity finally asks too much of our lovely planet and kills it. But in the sense of total enialation of the human race by God ... not going to happen in any time that people will have to suffer through it.

First of all I don't think people really like to think about this kind of stuff especially if you have children so my thoughts are a very very very long time wayyyyy after you and I are gone.

this is a retarded answer, but:
The Mayans predicted that the world would end in 2012.
It seems likely. Global warming, the damage of the O-Zone layer...
THE WEATHER RIGHT NOW!
