Are you asking if the moon split off from the Earth? There are several theories about the origin of the moon. The most widely accepted theory today is that the moon began as a primitive planet in the very early days of the solar system. After colliding with Earth, it assumed a stable orbit around it.

Other passe theories include that it was once part of Earth itself, and it was blasted off somehow. Or, it was a completely different object all together from a distant part of the solar system that got captured by Earth's gravitational field.
