That's a somewhat complex question with a pretty simple answer: Punishment and reward.

One of the most basic ways of learning is punishment and reward. People are slaves to God because they think that if they do not follow him they will be punished by being sent to Hell and rewarded for following him by being sent to Heaven. People are slaves to money because they know that without money they will be punished with a harsh life and with it they will live prosperous lives because money can get them most of what they want or need. People are slaves to sex simply because it feels good. And drugs for the same reason, as well as addiction.

Because people generally feel like they need to be part of or take part in something, whether that something is a religion, activity etc. and they end up feeling that that's the only way they can be accepted.
