Since the steps are given to you, this is a relatively easy problem.
Step 1: 80 hours times $7.50 per hour = $600
Step 2: Since the person worked 87 hours, he worked 7 "extra" hours. So, 7 times 1.5 times $7.50 = $78.75
Step 3: $600 + $78.75 = $678.75
Step 4: 7.65% equals .0765 and 25% = .25. We want to take these percentages from the original amount ($678.75, the amount before taxes). $678.75 times .0765 = $51.92 and $678.75 times .25 = $169.69
Step 5: $51.92 + $169.69 = $221.61
Step 6: $678.75 - $221.61 = $457.14, so the answer is D.

STEP1 80 x 7.50 = 600 the normal hrs in two weeks
STEP 2 7 x 7.5 x 1.5 = 78.75 overtime worked is 7 hrs times the hourly rate times the overtime rate
STEP 3 600 + 78.75 = 678.75
Now calculate tax to be subtracted the total pay ( Gross Pay $ 678.75 )
STEP 4 Social Security Tax
678.75 x7.65/100 (7.65% )
= $51.92
Federal Income Tax
678.75 x 25/100 ( 25% )
= $169.68
STEP5 Now add the twoTaxes together
$51.92 + $ 169.68
= $221.60
STEP 6 Subtract $221.60 ( Step 5 ) from $678.75 (Step 3 )
678.75 - 221.60 = 457.15
The answer is d) $457.15
Next time don;t be overwhelmed by the words and what the problem looks like just take your time and follow the steps set out Just do 1, 2 ,3 ,4 etc. that's exactly what I've done here.

Ok, I'll try:
The person worked 87 hours.
Step 1. The first 80 hours was normal pay, 7.50 per hour. 80*7.50 = $600.
Step 2. The person worked more than 80 hours. For that work they get 1.5 times the hourly pay. So, they get paid 1.5 * 7.50 or $11.25 per hour for overtime hours. They had 7 overtime hours (87 - 80), so that is 7*11.25 = $78.75. Gee, overtime rocks!
Step 3. $600 for regular hours plus $78.75 overtime = $678.75. Unfortunately, you don't get all this because of taxes.
Step 4. These taxes are expressed as "%" which stands for "per cent", which means "per 100".
How do you do math with that? Just divide by 100 to get the "per cent". For example, 25% of 100 would be 100 * (25/100) = 25.
Social Security Tax is 678.75 * (7.65/100) = 51.924375 and Federal Income Tax is 678.75 * (25/100) = 169.6875. Ouch!
I know these long numbers looks scary, but don't worry - I'm using a calculator. However, you can't really pay fractions of a cent in tax, so let's "round" it to the nearest cent: 51.92 SocSec and 169.69 FedIncTax.
Step 5. Lets add those crazy taxes together. 51.92 + 169.69 = 221.61. That is the total tax you pay! Ouch, I thought only the rich had to pay taxes!
Step 6. The money you actually get is the total pay from step 3: $678.75 minus the total taxes from step 5: $221.61 which is: $457.14.
There ya go.
Good luck!

Break it down into steps.
First multiply 80 by 7. U get $560. Then take .5 of 80, u get 40. Add that to 560 u have 600. Now do the same with the 7 but put it in a seperate group. (49 +3.5=52.5) Multiply the 52.5 by 1.5 and you get 52.5+26.25=78.75. Then add that number to your other total. 678.75. then u take 7.65 % from 678.75, rougly 51.924375.
Then take 25% of 678.75. That is 169.6875. Add that total to 51.924375. That gives you about 221.6115. Now take this number and subtract it from step 3's total (678.75). That gives you the answer 457.1385 or (D).
I had to edit this sry... didn't pay attention to taxes at first.

1: 80 X 7.50 = 600.00
2: 7 (extra hours) X 1.5 = 10.50. So, multiply 10.50 X 7.50= 78.75
3: 600.00 + 78.75 = 678.75
4: 678.75 X 7.65% = 51.92 and 678.75 X 25% = 169.69
5: 51.92 + 169.69 = 221.61
6: 678.75 - 221.61 = 457.14
The answer is D.

1. 80 x 7.50=600
2. 7 x1.5= 10.5
10.5 x 7.5 = 78.75
3.600 +78.75= 678.75
4 678.75 x .0765= 51.92
678.75 x .25=169.68
5. 51.92 + 169.69= 221. 61
6.678.75-221.61= 457.14 D
