I would say he is not, since he was the bad guy in the Naruto series and the main character tends to be better.
But if the power would be talked about, he was said to par a sannin and Orochimaru was afraid of him and he even beat a skilled jounin like Kakashi because of his Mangekyou Sharingan. He mastered his bloodline limit at the age of 8 and even became an ANBU at the age of thirteen(he could have been an ANBU captain too).

In later episodes, it is shown Itachi coming back to Konoha with some other male that has a Fish-Face and Kakashi actually fights against Itachi and looses. If it wasn't for Gai, Kakashi would have been toast!

I perfer Sasuke over him any day. He is so cold-hearted with his lil bro. I still don't understand why people say Sasuke is so "evil" cuz he betrayed his friends and Konoha...becuz if they haven't noticed...Itachi is just as bad. he also betrayed Konoha and killed his friend to get the sharigan.
