I am sending in my residence application form soon, and I was wondering what are the pro's and con's of living in a dorm room vs. living on campus at the University Apartments. I will be a freshman and I of course want to meet new people, but I'd also like the extra space of the Apartments, even though it will be mostly upperclassmen. What would you suggest?

I hated dorm life.. ended up moving to a friends house by the end of the first sememster but still had to pay for my dorm..make sure you are a dorm type of person.. You can still hang out and party over at the dorms if that is what you are worried about. It is hard to get any studying done in the dorms.. and dorm food is so gross in the cafeteria's. But everyone wants that dorm experience, you might regret it if you dont do it. Most of the time you still have the same rules in the Apartments and pay more. Still no drinking, being loud ect. You still have people watching over you like in the dorms.. so if you are renting an apartment from your university i would go with the dorm if you really want the real college experience and dont mind having a little less space. If you decide to get the apartment most likely you will just be paying alot more (even more than if you got an apartment around town with friends) and still have people telling you what to do and when to come home. so unless you really want the space and to live with upperclassmen, the dorm is basically the same thing except you pay less. I would do the dorm first year make some friends in the dorms.. then move out 2nd year and get a real apartment not associated with the university with those people (you will be paying alot less and actually be able to do what you want)

Dorm room. It is definitely cheaper. Renting or subletting apartments in NYC is incredibly expensive (you would probably sublet, which is when you stay in a tenants home while they are on vacation or something...you'd sublet because you will likely go home for the summer, so you wouldn't want to pay rent for an apartment you won't live in.) I subletted an apartment in NYC with my boyfriend this summer. It was 500 square feet, included a kitchen, and was $2,800 a month. You will be hard-pressed to find a nice apartment that's under $2,000, though you could probably get a kind of yucky apartment for $800-1,000 if you're lucky. If you live in an apartment, you will need to cook for yourself, which is annoying, and groceries are expensive in NYC too. Being on the NYU meal plan will save you time and probably money as well. You'll miss out on the dynamics of dorm life, which is really important in making friends. Also, check to see if NYU even allows you to live off-campus. Many colleges don't let you do this until at least your sophomore year.

What school?

In general, I'd vote for dorms. Yes, the apartments may be nicer, but if they're upper classmen, it doesn't help the primary benefit of dorming (meeting friends that will last through your college career and beyond).

In the dorms, you'll be with other freshman. People your age and sharing the same experiences. For the first year, I'd dorm. Then apply for the apartments the year after that if you want.

This depends on the initial college experience you are looking for. If you are up for the groupie stuff and dont mind people hanging out in your place at all hours of the day and night, then go for a dorm room. Otherwise, if you value your quiet time and want to get away from people once in a while, then the Apartments might be better.

Dorms are for low status dweebs. Anyone who is anyone has their own apartment.
