the cup takes all the ambiant noise around you, the noise that your brain filters out, as well as the noises you do hear, echos it and basicly turnes it into a new sound. your brain no longer filters it out and you hear it. if you turn on a tv or music and put a cup up to your ear you will be able to make out the original noise but it will sound a bit differant.
