You should definitely wait until after you go away, when you first get a water dragon you want to put the least amount of stress on him as possible and going away soon after getting it will be terrible for the dragon. I have two of my own they are great they don't require a ton of care compared to a lot of reptiles but the poop needs to be cleaned out every day you need to change the large water dish every day you need to mist them every day and you need a heat lamp and a fluorescent lamp the heat lamp should be on all the time on high during the day and should be plugged into a dimmer so it can be turned down at night to about 1/4 of the way on. The fluorescent lamp should be on during the day and off at night. Water dragons can bite just like anything with a mouth but mine which I have had for around 1 year have never bit me. Handle them daily they don't get stressed too much by human interaction and if you can hand feed them it is a good strategy to getting them to warm up to you. they will eventually require a Rather large enclosure. try to provide a tall enclosure with lots of branches and vines for climbing. when you do get them they will probably bob their heads and wave their hand that is completely normal so don't worry.Good Luck!
Amanda doesn't know what she is talking about you can't use a haet pad for water dragons it will burn them they like to dig in the substrate.

Definitely wait until your holidays, some water dragons can be fussy and they need daily care. The temps should be 84-88 daytime with basking area of 90F. Night time temps should be 75- 80F. The hardest part is humidity, which should be at least 70%. Alot of people use cool mist humidifiers on timers set to go on and off throughout the day as needed. They need a water dish they can immerse themselves in, also the usually use the 'bathroom' in their water dish so it requires frequent changing, if the water dish is kept clean they usually will not mess any where else in the cage. I've had my water dragon for over 2 years and she's never bitten me, she has whipped me with her tail once, that stung. But remember, any animal can bite, but Chinese water dragons are very friendly, mine loves to be held. Be prepared for a large cage, they can grow up to 2.5 - 3 feet in length. They eat insects, and as they get older pinkies. They are quite a commitment, but worth it.

Chinese Water Dragons, they need alot of heating. You should have a heat lamp kept on all day. Other then that they need a big water dish (to swim in) and need to eat every other day. Water Dragons can get stressed so i would suggest wait till your done moving everything and stuff. Water Dragons can bite but it does'nt hurt alot. Ive had a water dragon and he never bit me they are very nice, but if you threaten them or touch their food when its in their cages they will bite. They make good pets for owners that have the time. Good Luck!

Wait until after your trip before getting it. Read about the care before getting one. It sounds like they require the same amount of care as any other lizard.

You can't leave it for a week. They need fresh veggies daily, someone to mist their tank, someone to turn on their day and night lamps, and someone to refill their water. They need heat mats, haet lamps, UVA/UVB bulbs, heat bulbs, heat lamps, things to climb on, and much more. Not to mention, they get very large and most people can't afford to keep them when they get that big. Please reconsider unless you have alot of time and money to commit to such a pet.
