Republicans are beholden to rich individuals, polluters, war mongers, racists and homophobes, and large corporations.
Democrats are beholden to people who care about the environment, poeple who care about womens rights and equality, and people who care about workers rights and the middle class.
They're both beholden to special interests, so you just have to decide which "special interests" match your interests.
Oh and Republicans thought the Iraq war was a good idea.

Essentially, the differences in the party line are as follows:
Democrats believe that Federa government is there to take care of it's people. They very often believe in social and educational programs and don't mind paying the extra taxes to fund them. Ecology is often very important to this group - so forest preservation, clean air acts, etc. usually come from this side of the aisle.
Republicans think the State governments should hold the bulk of the power and they are disinclined to pay for social services. They are often wealthy and feel that others need to earn their living and not be handed help from the government (which would cost the rich the most). Traditionally this group is very concerned with fiscal responsibility and they have long blamed Democrats for budget deficits.

Republicans don't flip flop on issues and don't betray their country...John Kerry, Clinton, Carter all dems and all have bad mouthed the US to foreigners!!! I was a Democrat but that BS turned me off, disgusted and shamed me!
Republicans have jobs and are not all rich (I can attest to that). Republicans believe in limited government interference in the daily lives of Americans, can walk and chew gum at the same time, they just need to get a spine and stop letting the dems steam roll them...

republicans are usually more religious, keep everything the same in governing and have a small government. having a small government means less taxes.
democrats are usually less religious and want to provide more social help to the poor thus a larger government and increased taxes.

One end is for more liberal ideas, and the other side takes a more conservative stance on issues. It's been a political battle since the nation was founded.
