The film was released theatrically in May 2005, but premiered at the Toronto film festival in September 2004; it was nominated in the 2005 Academy Awards and won.

You are confused by how the Academy works.
They do awards a year in "arrears".
In 2006 they nominated Crash for many awards for it's release in 2005. It won Film Editing, Writing and Best Picture!
The 2005 Academy Awards (the 78th) were aired in March of 2006.
The 2006 Academy awards will be announced soon, and will air in late February of this year which is 2007!

That show was so good it made me cry, but when I spoke about it on work my peers (who happened to be all white) said that is was **** and that they did not understand it. I guess they were not nominated because the truth REALLY offends.

They probably did not release it until then. I suppose that is what qualified it. By the way, I heard that this was the worst movie ever to get best picture. I have not seen it but I heard it was atrocious.
