Its not everything, and it literally means nothing later in life.

Popularity, is a passing thing, a fleeting thing. Look at someone like Britney Spears and how popular she was, a few years back, and look at her now. She's become a joke.
Being popular, is just being at the right place at the right time. Television and movie stars have popularity, but it fades, quickly, after they have a movie or show that bombs.
But people like you that have friends, now that's where it counts.
Remember that old movie, "It's a wonderful Life" when at the end, the Brother, toasts Jimmy Stewart, as being the richest man in town, because all his friends came to his rescue.
Thats a lot better than being popular for a few mins, weeks or even years. Friends are forever.

You can be popular without having many real friends. I think its better to have a few people you really know and can really trust and count on then to know a bunch who won't be there when you need them. If you are still in highschool, it can seem like popularity is everything. Don't worry. The quarterback of the football team might be serving you at McDonalds when school is over. Its amazing to see where people i knew in highschool to be popular ended up now. If you are happy with yourself and your friends, don't worry. :-)

Popularity seems like everything, when you are young. It's not!
As you stated, you have a lot of friends, to me, that is popular. Just be the kind of friend, you would like to have.

No, and if you read up on some studies, usually the people who are consider the most "popular" are disliked by more people than the people who just lay low and have a lot of friends.

no, popularity is nothing. you have to be happy within yourself to feel a sense of popularity. the most popular person in the world can be the unhappiest person on the inside that you could ever meet. like yourself and everyone will see you for what you really are.
