Well, i'm sure the author has lots to think about. "okay, i need to start this book, but i'm not only thinking about this book but books that will follow it. Who will live who will die, when does one book end and the next begin, when shall i introduce this character. It must be a very complicated process. Like writing an extremely loong book and then having to decide which way to divide it up and sell it.

It's not hard for all people~as for myself and several other readers I know~we really enjoy book series. What I find hard about starting a series is when all the books aren't completed and you have to wait a long time for the next one to come out!

Its not...not for me. For some people I know it is...either they want to get all the books at one time so they don't have to wait for them, or they just simply don't want to read more than one book. I have heard other people say that a series is hard because they aren't sure what to expect and what if they end up not liking it half way through the second book?

I think its because its alot of work to read an entire series. Especally if the books are over 300 pages. Plus if you get into the book you gotta read the others to see what happens.

They get stuck in a rut, thinking that the series they were reading first would go on forever. New series have to sound like the old series' they've read and they don't want to grow or change.

Because they probably have to wait for the rest of the series to be published, and sometimes that can be a torture, It's better to read series that are finished. I'm not sure though if this answers your question.

for a reader, its only hard if you really aren't interested in the books... otherwise you couldn't wait to start the next one!
for a writer, i guess it just must be the thought of starting something that doesn't end at the end of the first book, but just goes on.. and on.. and on...
but hey, i like to read and i hate to write!!

Because once you crack the first page you are comitting to that series and to throw yourself into this world that you know will last a while. Its a comitment and a journey that you must be sure you wanna take before you read anything.
