Corncobs and any not-too-dirty waste paper. Cut-up newspapers and wrappings and the Sears, Montgomery Ward, or other catalog. Whatever expendable, absorbant material was at hand when the need occurred.
From what my father says (he grew up on a hardscrabble Oklahoma farm), I believe that standards for this activity, and for the personal cleanliness it is supposed to produce, were a lot lower back then. I've heard one horrifying tale about a kid using leaves, which happened to be poison ivy leaves. I hope that one isn't really true!

Before that, some used unneeded papers such as daily newspaper. Native Americans, I heard, used big leaves. It is a good thing that we've got toilet paper, eh?

Long before... Do you mean the cavemen? Because they didn't wipe their tushies, dear--they just walked around in their own wet chocolate.
But after, people became less primitive and they used leaves--well not less primitive but they found it a hassle to have nasty stuff sticking to beds and chairs.

The people just slide over some grassy area for about a meter or so and that usually did it for them.

Leaves. But in some culture, I believed they used one of their hands and never washed it, just used their other hand for everything else.
