If you are a regular hourly person then no they can not. If you are Salary or an Exempt hourly employee then they can.
But any work you do for them must be compensated, even if it is "off the clock". This could be in additional pay or "Comp" time which would be like additional vacation days.

No, assuming you are a non-exempt hourly employee. Your employer is required to pay you for work performed whether "on the clock" or not.

Federal overtime laws were changed in 2004. Republicans apparently thought businesses paid too much money-part of the new "work harder for less plan". There are now many more exemptions, especially for white collar workers(exemption means you can be made to work extra without pay. There are many people that are now exempt from overtime.
Check with your state.
