If it's a CRT (the larger, glass front screens) you can use anything from windex to soapy water -- basically anything you use to clean a piece of glass. You may choose to stick to alcohol however, if it has an anti-glare coating. (You can tell if you look at it from the side during bright light, it'll look a little purple/bluish)
If it's a LCD screen (more compact, plastic front screen), I recommend you use isopropyl alcohol and water, or simply soapy water. A microfiber cloth is also very useful with LCD screens to prevent scratches and remove marks without much pressure.
For ANY type of screen, make sure the water does not seep into the sides of the monitor (inside it), as this can cause serious damage to your screen.
You can usually acquire isopropyl alcohol at your local pharmacy or hardware store. Lens Cleaner usually works as well.
Take Care,
Ken

If it is a CRT monitors, then a damp cloth will do. If it is a laptop or LCD monitor, go to the computer store and get a can of screen cleaner specifically intended for LCD screens.
IF IT IS LCD (including laptops) DO NOT USE WINDEX OR SIMILAR CLEANERS - THEY WILL DAMAGE THE SCREEN!

a soft cloth if it's a flat panel; if it's a big ol' CRT monitor then just spray some window cleaner on the cloth and wipe it off. Also, Kensington makes great wet/dry screen wipes safe for all types.

Windex if it's a CRT (glass picture tube). Soft damp cloth if it's LCD. This is provided you can't find the manufacturer's cleaning instructions!

Use a dry lint free cloth to dust your screen. If it needs a better cleaning, most office supply stores sell anti-static pre-moistened wipes that you can safely use.

Windex - or whatever you use to clean your mirrors and windows in your home (even those squishy screens).
Peace!
