'who will rid me of this turbulent priest?"' quoth HenryII, our noble monarch. Little did he know his Christmas wish was to come true.
apparently 'Becks' after his return from France had been fulminating in his pulpit since Dec 25, busilly excommunicating all and sundry in England from HII down. No sooner said than done- four good geezers -Reg, Bill, Dick and Shug headed for the Archbishop's gaffe and despatched him right on his altar!
Marytrdom and sainthood my ****- these 4 guys should get knighthoods for what they did- saved all England from excommunication and damnation- innit?

H II was excommunicated because of that murder and was forced to public repentance in the cathedral of Avranches, Normandie

Well, it seems that the sainthood of more than one individual was prompted by politics and/or popular devotion--like that of St. Edmund, an early English king who was captured and killed by the Danes.

Becket became a symbol of the struggle between Church and State, just as Edmund became a symbol of the valiant Christian king who died for his faith (even though it was far more likely that the Danes just wanted him dead because he was fighting them).

Actually, Becket's death strengthened the Catholic Church in England, which eventually pressured Henry II to do public penance for the deed. Even though legend ascribes terrible ends to the four knights who carried out the act, nothing all that bad happened to them.

Absolutely! If some daft churchman challenges the rule of the King, there's only one outcome.
