It's kind of old and may be a direct-to-video, not sure who it stars but------- the main character wife dies and he goes into depression until someone offers him a VR type of machine and he get to see his wife again until soon he's practically living in it, but is really slowly killing himself because hes not eating or sleeping because he does it in VR which isnt real....skip to the end....it shows an empty city on new years midnight with either a voice over or an insert of text before the credits saying that everyone is now spending their new years in the VR machine. Thanks

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

I myself am unsure - it sounds a lot like Solaris with George Clooney, though there are obvious differences in the story. But I am dead certain it is not Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - that story is about cherishing memories and how two people decide to get them erased.

Joel (Carrey) is stunned to discover that his girlfriend Clementine (Winslet) has had her memories of their tumultuous relationship erased. Out of desperation, he contacts the inventor of the process, Dr. Howard Mierzwiak (Wilkinson), to have Clementine removed from his own memory. But as Joel's memories progressively disappear, he begins to rediscover their earlier passion. From deep within the recesses of his brain, Joel attempts to escape the procedure. As Dr. Meirzwiak and his crew (Dunst, Ruffalo, Wood) chase him through the maze of his memories, it's clear that Joel just can't get her out of his head. thats the story of Eternal sunshine of spotless mind, so sounds like thats not the name of the movie you thought?

I think the one you are thinking about is with Michael Keaton. Do you remember if he had a son in this movie, and from what I remember is is absolutely obsessed in contacting his deceased wife and thinks he does. It was kinda of interesting but a little weird for my taste.
