there are appliances called swamp coolers that cool the air by evaporating water. they are in cabinets, and most portable units have a reservoir to hold the water. the drawback to these machines is that they put humidity into the air. if you live where its already 60% or more relative humidity during the summer, these wont do much good.

there are appliances called mini split, or ductless split air conditioners. these are mounted on the wall or in the ceiling and are hooked to a condenser out side just like a regular split system.

if you are asking why you cant just sit a window unit on a chair in the middle of the room and cool the room, the answer is simple. air conditioners do not "make" cool. they move heat. an A/C unit soaks up the heat in the house and dumps it outside.

hope this helps,

I don't know where you live but in Canada at the Home Depot or large box stores you can buy a portable a/c unit it is on wheels and can be put in any room and is vented through a window and just plugs into a wall outlet. You have to watch it carefully in the hot weather because the bottom panel fills with water and must be emptied regularly. Hope this helps

There are mobile air conditioners. You usually set them in the middle of your room. The do not have to be put in your window. I know Target had some this summer you may want to call and ask. You could also look on EBAY they have everything.

Yes...they're called floor or cabinet air conditioners...very common in workshops, auto shops, warehouses, etc. They're available at many places such as Home Depot or Lowes...you'll likely have to order it and pick it up later.

Yes, they make free standing one, however there is still a tube that has to be put out the window. So it has to be near a window. They are pretty powerful, at least the newer versions.
