Definitely not. They're not legal and gun crime is bad enough as it is.
Things would not be better if everyone could get hold of one.

Yes of course. The idea that murderers, rapists, and thieves will stop at violating gun laws is absurd. Every time the UK increased the level of gun control, other violent crime skyrocketed. The reason is simple. Now the victims can't fight back. The occurences of "hot" burgleries, or break-ins where the residents are home, have increased greatly. The majority of violent crimes in the United States, especially ones involving gun violence, occur in the large cities, where law abiding citizens aren't allowed to arm themselves. If gun bans worked, then Detroit and Washington D.C. would be the safest places in America. Reality, however says quite the opposite. They're two of the most dangerous places in the US.

Besides, people should have the opportunity to bear arms in order to defend themselves from the government. One of the classic steps to subduing any populace is to disarm them. The British did it to the Scottish, the Irish, the Welsh, and now their own people. Don't think people need guns to defend themselves? The Arab government in Sudan disarmed the black inhabitants of Darfour. Then started to massacre them. Hitler disarmed the Germans before systematically exterminating some them. The Jews might not have been able stand against the Vermacht for long, but didn't they deserve the chance to defend themselves? Britain isn't at the point where the citizens need to rise up. But things can change. You never know what will happen in the future. By the time you realize anything is wrong, it will be too late. You will all be sheep.

Outlaw guns are only outlaws will have guns - like now.

People will find a way to hurt each other , no law can ever change this. If someone breaks the law then they should be punished or educated to prevent this occurring again.

The highest gun ownership country per home owner in the World is Switzerland! - and most folks regard that place as boring, not a war zone.

In New Zealand hand guns have been banned for over fifty years and the police still have no control over the drug gangs there, who naturally carry them.

In my opinion, making the lawful defenceless is not going to make the lawbreaker peaceful or less of a bully.

No!!!! If you want to live in that kind of society then go to somewhere like America! When you say ALL citizens that would mean would-be criminals too. You're not a criminal till you are CAUGHT commiting a crime!
There are enough illegal guns out there already!!
And dont say its for Protection either. Shoot someone and you end up in prison. Look at Tony Martin's case its not that long ago! If you are niave enough to think that people in America are safer in their homes than we are! Why are their statistics higher?
The gun related accident statistics in America are horrifying too! Do you know how many children are hurt or killed over there? If it was a disease people would be screaming for a cure!!

Since when are citizens of the UK denied the right to buy a gun? If you have a shotgun licence you can buy a shotgun but not one with automatic or magazine capability. If you have a firearms certificate you can buy and keep a rifle, pistol, or air weapon over certain specifications.
Permit or licence applications are subject to age restrictions, criminal records, secure storage facilities, areas of usage and other conditions that may be required by local Chief Constables.

Here in the US there are always news items featuring the shooting of people with guns and the accidental shooting of kids by kids who find daddy's gun.

So since the UK has somehow gotten guns out of the hands of British subjects, there should be very little of that sort of thing going on.

Criminals, whether there is gun ownership or not, would and do get the same amount of guns and use them in the same circumstances. So I would say that keeping guns out of the public's hands would decrease the injuries and deaths from gun related incidents, while not increasing criminal possession and use.

No. It is the sign of a backward society. Have you heard of the Dunblane tragedy and the way 'citizens of United Kingdom', reacted to it? Most British people do not have the need for guns. Gun's breed gun's and violence. Shotgun's and small firearms is strictly controlled and registered to a trusted minority, those who are privileged to own one. That's not to say 'gun culture' and gun crime isn't a huge problem and on the increase in Britain.
The root is obvious.

I would not say to all of the citizens. I think there should be a mandatory gun course that you must pass as well as a background check to help weed out the criminals.

Surprisingly I believe the answer should be yes.
Innocent people can no longer rely on the police or justice system to protect them and the criminals are already armed.
It would also give us some defence against a government(s) that are increasingly trying to reduce the freedom of the individual, they would be less likely to risk an armed revolt against the coming police state that is Britain.

Not unless they can prove they need one, or are mentally stable enough to take on such responsibilty. You give guns to just anyone and they'll start shooting away at anyone and everything that annoys them and that could be you. See the bigger picture.
Make guns so easy to get and every little petty scumbag will have one. Is that what you want, a society where everyone shoots everyone else?

Hmmm.

USA, where everyone can carry a gun; 15 000 gun homicides annually.

UK, where we don't have this 'right'; less than 100 gun homicides annually.

Do you think there could be some link between having a gun and shooting people; and not having a gun and not shooting people?
