I have heard that the rate of rotation of our planet is receding. So I assume that at some specific time our planet will stop rotating. I wonder what could happen next. Will it still circle the sun or is it also possible that the rotation will reverse?

It will continue to orbit but one side would always face the sun. that side of the earth would burn up and the other side would freeze.

The Earth used to rotate at 3 times the rate it now does, being slowed by tides and wind. It may eventually rotate so as to always present the same face to the sun(as the moon does to the Earth now), but will not reverse its direction of rotation.

The Earth could either stop rotating or stop orbiting and spiral into the sun. Calculations however show that the sun will burn out before either of those occur and in that process (which includes enlargement) the Earth will be engulfed or at the least burned to a crisp.

My theory goes as follows: The Earth will revolve at pretty much the same distance. Let's say you have a ping-pong ball attached to a piece of string. Hold one end of the string and spin it around your head ( your head being the sun ). Another example is an ice skater, when she does one of those inward spins they're so famous for, she accelerates her speed as she draws inward, keeping her spinning (rotating). Thus, theoretically, if the Earth remains the same distance, and the Sun the same mass and density, the Earth will remain rotating as is.

It won't stop rotating. It is like spinning a ball on a string around your head. When the string is short it seems to be going really fast, as the string gets longer it appears to be slowing down. That is what's happening with the earth. It is gradually escaping the sun's gravity and its string is getting longer. It will not stop or reverse.

the inertia as it subsides would draw us off course, out of the orbital track,we simply would move in a straight line,of course thats not including variances brought on,like a top as it slowly spins down and wobbles, crashing into the sun is an unprobabilty since the sun is stationary, another planet is the more possible solution that wed collide with as we would veer of the course of our cycle rotations

The rotation is not particularly relevant (the moon shows the same face to the earth all the time, for example).
It's our orbit around the sun you've got to worry about - if you've got lots (I means lots) of time.

the rotation does not affect the orbit around the sun

you could only say it in ur coronary heart that u have confidence in only one god and that prophet muhammad is the messenger dont tell absolutely everyone, and u develop right into a muslim secretly only pray at 5 diff situations (the place u will ought to do a real good job of hiding) or only pray as many as obtainable and dont exchange ur call so no person will understand :-) and supply charity and help the undesirable and worship the lord Allah on my own and stick to his messenger and the holy e book better of success :-) peace
