what is the box and why has it bugun this 'tapping' sound when it gets to a certain part of its cycle, it is a frost free model

That is the defrost timer for the frost-free feature. It is a timer that tells the defrost mechanism (a heater or a valve for warm refrigerant) to send heat to the freezer coils and melt off the ice so that it can run down a drain to a bottom pan.

But if the timer has never made any noise before and now is suddenly noisy you might want to have it checked out.

Some freezers depend on that timer to keep them running, if it gets stuck on defrost cycle everything in your freezer could be ruined.
