in the first book after Edward and Bella pretty much become a complete couple, the night he stays with her and hums her to sleep after the whole "meadow" incident...that morning he tells her Charlie left "after reattaching her battery cables" and then he mentions Charlie wants to stop her, even though she's determined to go. I don't get it! Where did he not want her to go? Why? I know she goes to the CUllen's house, but what did Charlie not want Bella to do?

Okay, I have reread the part in question. Charlie sees Bella acting very strange and jumps to conclusion that she's about to sneak out of the house and run off with some guy. He still doesn't know that she is in love with Edward. And he of course is clueless to him being a vampire. What he doesn't know is that Edward is hiding in Bella's room and going to spend the night. "Charlie thinks I'm sneaking out. . . apparently I look a little overexcited." (299) She wasn't actually planning on going anywhere. So he disconnected the battery for no reason.
