I recently finished a movie I have been working on for the past 2 years. I was wondering if anyone knows what are the next steps I need to take to make it successful?

Have you edited and completed post production?

If so if you had prearranged financial backing you have to distribute as per the agreements.

If you don't have financial agreements and you have paid for all rights with sound, etc, whirl it off to film festivals. This is expensive, but well worth it if you have a good film. That is the next stage in independent films. Often finding distributors comes after the film fest stage for most beginning film makers.

Promotion. If the film is finished, edited, and canned, your next step is to market the film. If you are a student, then student film festivals, if you are an independent, independent film festivals, test audiences, free viewings, word of mouth, etc. Just like when you write a book, someone has to view it, give an opinion, give it a chance.
